Urbana man charged with burglary

URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly broke in a house in that city and stole a man's cellphone has been charged with residential burglary.

An Urbana police report said about 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, a 26-year-old man was in his apartment in the 100 block of West California Street when he heard a tearing sound.

He ran to his bedroom and found a man later identified as Jeffrey A. Lesure, 33, reaching in through a torn screen with his right arm and most of his torso inside the window grabbing a cellphone from the desk.

The resident started yelling and the man backed out and ran.

About 10 minutes later, a Champaign County sheriff's deputy found a person matching the intruder's description at the intersection of Washington and Race streets. The victim identified Lesure as the man in his apartment and said he was wearing the same unique T-shirt that the intruder had and had the same closely cropped haircut.

The phone was not found.

Judge John Kennedy set Lesure's bond at $5,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the resident.

Lesure, who listed an address in the 900 block of Harvey Street, is due back in court Aug. 5. If convicted, he faces a mandatory prison term of four to 15 years.
