At 6-foot-1, Callie Jo McFarland doesn't do Corvettes.

"I'm too tall," she said, "unless it's a convertible."

So she'll comfortably watch the parade of hot rods from her perch in Monticello's town square when the Bloomington Gold show rolls into town tonight.

"I don't mind living vicariously through other drivers," she said.

As Monticello's director of community development, McFarland played a key role in convincing the Corvette show to roar into Piatt County. The road tour, arguably the weekend's most popular event, starts in Champaign and revs up in Monticello around 6:30 p.m.

Last year, it was as if the Sages won a state championship. In football.

"In Monticello, we have a parade for everything and there's always a great turnout," McFarland said. "But there was more cheering, more people from all across the board than I had seen in a while. It was organized chaos."

They'll close downtown streets at 3 p.m. today, make bleachers available for seating and distribute 1,000 checkered flags for waving. For a couple hours, town square will resemble the infield at Indy.

"How often do you get to see hundreds of Corvettes in one stream?" McFarland said. "It's a spectacle."

And it's Monticello's for a second consecutive year.

"Funny story: I think we were the second choice (in 2013) but there was construction in Mahomet," McFarland said. "We were sloppy seconds but I'm not going to complain about it. We won by default, but we're still going to pull out all the stops."
