Man charged in fatal Champaign shooting

CHAMPAIGN — A man who police say fired a gun at the scene of a fatal shooting last week is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Devon Demetrius Craig, 37, who posted an address in the 1200 block of Paula Drive, Champaign, was charged on Monday with being an armed habitual criminal.

Craig is due back in court on Aug. 12.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said police had identified Craig as a person who fired a gun on June 24 at the scene on Hedge Road in Champaign where Allen M. Redding was shot multiple times following a car chase.

Craig was arrested over the weekend by Chicago police and members of the U.S. Marshal's fugitive apprehension task force and then brought to Champaign County for arraignment, Dunn said.

Chief Deputy Troy Daniels said Mr. Redding, 26, was shot several times while in the 1500 block of Hedge Road about 5:50 p.m. June 24.

Police were told that people were being chased in vehicles by others who were armed and that multiple shots had been fired.

The officers tended to Mr. Redding until paramedics could get him to Carle Foundation Hospital. Daniels said the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Instead of spending your time rolling your eyes you should really stop and do some homework on gun statistics. Even beyond statistics you can take the words straight from the source that "3/5 of felons polled agreed that a criminal would not mess around with a victim he knows is armed with a gun". (Per: US Department of Justice Survey of Incarcerated Felons).  Each year guns save more innocent lives than take them...FACT!  See the problem here???  Everyone in Chicago (and until recently the entire state of Illinois) knows your average victim is not armed with a gun outside their home.  Do you understand that criminalistic people do not follow the laws that already exist and we are to believe that creating a new set of gun laws or an all out gun ban we will somehow be safer because all the criminals will suddenly follow these new laws???  Please wake up to the actual world around you and not some progressive, socialist dream world in which you hope to live.
