Prison sentence for woman who stole from elderly client

URBANA — A Champaign woman who admitted she violated her probation for stealing from an elderly woman for whom she acted as a caretaker has been resentenced to prison.

Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis earlier this week resentenced Jennifer Phillips, 28, who last lived in the 1100 block of Frank Drive, to two years in prison.

In April 2013, she was sentenced to 30 months of probation after pleading guilty to stealing from a 93-year-old Champaign woman whose family she had known for about 12 years. As part of her sentence, she was ordered to make restitution of more than $14,000. In return, a more serious charge of financial exploitation of an elderly person was dismissed.

In May, the state filed a petition to revoke her probation alleging she had failed to make restitution, committed a domestic battery and failed to abstain from the use of alcohol. Phillips admitted to those violations.
