Philo board to meet on sale of land

PHILO — The village board will have a special meeting to accept bids on a vacant property at 103 McKinley Circle.

The village took ownership of the pie-shaped property in July 2013 after the Champaign County Circuit Court declared it abandoned. A house on the property was demolished in October 2013.

Two bids on the 86-foot by 195.85-foot property were opened Wednesday. Philo resident Dale Shipley bid $12,300, and S&S Construction owner Rod Schweighart of Philo bid $17,200.

The property was advertised for sale earlier this year with a minimum bid of $28,000. No bids were received at that time, so trustees decided not to require a minimum bid when it was advertised the second time.

Village Attorney Paul Hendren told the board that six votes were needed to accept a bid. Only three board members attended this week's meeting, so another was tentatively scheduled for July 16.
