Sex offender gets 3 years for living in prohibited area

URBANA — A registered sex offender has been sentenced to three years in prison for living in an area near children from which he was prohibited.

Byron Adams, 57, who last lived in the 1200 block of West Ellis Street in Urbana, pleaded guilty Tuesday before Champaign County Judge Harry Clem to being a sex offender present within a school zone.

Adams admitted that in May and June, he resided on Ellis after being told he couldn't live there because his home was within 500 feet of a day care center.

Due to a 1990 conviction for aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Adams has to register as a sex offender.

Assistant State's Attorney Claire Sharples-Brooks said besides the underlying sex conviction, Adams had other convictions for failure to register as a sex offender, obstructing justice, theft, and burglary.
