'Rally for Gaza' scheduled Friday in Urbana

URBANA — Local Palestinian sympathizers plan to hold a "Rally for Gaza" on Friday afternoon in front of the Urbana City Building.

"It's a Palestinian rally. I'm hoping that nobody say anything about the Israelis," said Patsy Howell, an event organizer. "I'm sure we'll have signs asking the government to not give more money to Israel. But this is an informational rally."

She said members of the University of Illinois group Students for Palestine, the local chapter of the Muslim American Society and the Central Illinois Mosque & Islamic Center in Urbana would take part in the rally. Among those scheduled to speak at the event is David Green of Urbana, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination in the 13th Congressional District earlier this year.

The event is scheduled for 2:30 to 4 p.m. Friday in front of the Urbana City Building, 400 S. Vine St., Howell said.

"There will be a lot of Palestinians there and they will have stories of losing their relatives," she said.

The group also held a small rally last Saturday outside of the Champaign County Courthouse, according to Howell.
