"Shop local" initiative ongoing in Mahomet

A new initiative in Mahomet seeks to spur residents to shop in the village.

The Mahomet Community Economic Development Commission launched the Shop Where You Love campaign in May.  The program includes a website, yard signs, flyers and scripts for businesses to say thank you to customers after a sale.

Commission Chairman Dan Becker said the program can help boost tax revenue for schools and public services and create new jobs in town.  He added that more revenue for businesses means the ability for more local charitable giving.

The commission was formed in 2010, and Becker said it was looking for a practical way to boost prosperity.  The village, along with a few area businesses, supplies the funding for the campaign.
