Talks continuing on medical marijuana presence in Urbana

Although nothing is formal yet, city officials in Urbana are preparing for the state's medical marijuana program to have a presence in town.

The city said it has heard from several groups who want to set up a cultivation center, where marijuana would be grown, or a dispensary, where the drug would be sold, within city limits.  And on Thursday night, the city plan commission will discuss zoning changes that would allow folks to bring a cultivation center or dispensary to town.

The city document laying out the changes said it's "likely" that the medical marijuana program will come to town in some form.  And so, the city's Community Development Director Libby Tyler said officials want to be ready.

Among the rules:  cultivation centers couldn't be within 2,500 feet of a school, day care or residential property.  Dispensaries couldn't be within 1,000 feet of a school or day care, and they couldn't be set up in a residential property.

Tyler said if the zoning changes get plan commission approval on Thursday, they will go before the city council on Aug. 4.  A "yes" vote there, she said, only means the rules are in place for the cultivation centers and dispensaries.  Those who want to set up in Urbana would still need any necessary city permits as well as state approval.
