In 1914, the Urbana school board is undecided about when school will begin this year, but it will be either Tuesday, Sept. 8, or Monday, Sept. 14. Unless something unforeseen occurs, the new high school will be completed in early September. The plasterers have everything competed but the auditorium and expect to finish it next week. The plumbers are installing fixtures.
In 1964, Champaign attorney Wallace M. Mulliken was nominated Saturday for judge of the new 4th Appellate Court District.
In 1999, schools soon may be in a bidding war for a valuable resource: substitute teachers. The Fisher district recently raised its substitute pay to $80 a day and other districts are doing the same. The reason, say administrators, is that teachers are taking more leave during the day to attend professional development seminars, are taking advantage of the Family Medical Leave Act and that the move to smaller class sizes has created a greater demand for teachers.
