Report of smoke causes plane to return to Willard Airport

Smoke detectors sounding on a Dallas-bound American Eagle flight prompted its return to the University of Illinois Willard airport in Savoy without incident Monday morning.

Airport Fire Marshal John Regal said the flight attendant aboard flight number 3009 thought she smelled a light smoke odor and saw a light haze near the rear lavatory. An Urbana firefighter who happened to be a passenger also smelled the odor but did not see the haze.  The Embraer 145 jet returned to the terminal where passengers deplaned.

Regal said no injuries were reported among the 44 passengers and three crew members.  He said the incident is still under investigation.
