Couple plead in drug case

URBANA — A Champaign couple arrested when police found cannabis and loaded handguns in their home in the spring have each entered guilty pleas.

Rickey Streeter, 20, and Shauna Porter, 19, who were living in the 1000 block of North Hickory Street, entered guilty pleas this week to a charge of possession with intent to deliver cannabis.

Both admitted having just under a pound of cannabis in the home on April 24. Champaign police found it during a court-authorized search of the home.

Streeter pleaded guilty Tuesday before Judge Tom Difanis and was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay more than $3,400 in fines and costs.

Porter pleaded guilty Monday and Difanis set her sentencing for Sept. 19. Her attorney intends to seek a sentence that includes drug treatment.

In exchange for their guilty pleas, Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Carlson agreed to dismiss charges alleging the pair had two loaded guns in the house.

A pound of Marijuana and two firearms.... Probation is the sentence? What kind of message does that send to the rest of the community. Yep we need more gun laws that our States Attorney can choose to ignore.

Drugs and Guns do not mix.  Guns + Drugs = PRISON

This is the exact reason for all these shootings in Champaign. How did they get probation? Makes nan sense at all. Hahaha... This is ridiculous how we steady been hearing about the CPD wanting people to cooperate, but they really need cooperation from the state's attorney. This is a joke. All you see in the paper is how these people get caught with guns and get probation or a few years. In Champaign, you will get more time for driving without a license than being caught with a loaded gun. I know people who have done prison time for petty amounts of weed, but these two got probation for a pound and two loaded guns.... Champaign's court system needs to get it together, this is ridiculous.

Here's a better idea....how about we just legalize cannabis and other drugs and end this predatory War on Drugs already?

If you lived in the neighborhood these two live in, you would probably want a gun to protect yourself too, whether you were selling weed or not.

Would anyone be complaining about these two getting probation if they were a young white couple in a nicer neighborhood?  I doubt it.
