Rantoul man charged in break-in
URBANA — A Rantoul man is due back in court in September after being charged Monday with breaking into a home in Rantoul over the weekend.
Rantoul police Sgt. Justin Bouse said a person checking on a relative's home in the 1000 block of Bel Air Drive discovered Sunday evening that a back window had been broken and entry made.
Several items, including a laptop computer, television, prescription medication, a handgun and jewelry, were stolen.
Police received information that Lawrence Handy, 35, who listed an address in the 1100 block of St. Andrews Circle, was trying to sell property that sounded like items stolen from the Bel Air home. Handy is related to the people who lived in the home, Bouse said.
They found Handy on Harmon Drive later Sunday evening and arrested him after finding he was wanted on a warrant from Arkansas. After his arrest, he was searched and police found a ring on him that had been stolen from the Bel Air Drive home.
Because of prior criminal convictions, Handy faces Class X penalties of six to 30 years in prison if convicted of residential burglary.
He's being held in the Champaign County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond and is due back in court Sept. 23.
