Concert to benefit veterans postponed

PIPER CITY — Due to a lack of a suitable venue, a proposed concert to raise funds to start a Veterans Assistance Commission in Ford County has been postponed, its organizer said.

Army veteran Anthony Guarino, 43, initially planned to hold his proposed Help for Heroes VAC Benefit Show on Aug. 9 on his 1.5-acre property 2 miles northwest of Piper City. Later, Guarino considered alternative venues others had mentioned as possibilities, including the fairgrounds in Melvin and Coady Park in Paxton.

However, the governing bodies of the two alternative sites were given too little advance notice to hold the show, and legal concerns remained about holding the event on Guarino's property.

"It's something that has to be thought out, and I did put thought into a lot of it, but not enough in order to have everything ready by the 9th," Guarino said.

Guarino said he still hopes to hold the concert at some point "in the near future." He said starting a VAC in Ford County is something veterans and non-veterans should support.
