Urbana man facing another drug case
URBANA — An Urbana man on probation in one drug case and who has another pending has been charged with another drug-related offense.
Jonte A. Powell, 19, who listed an address in the 200 block of South Dodson Drive, was charged Wednesday with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in the wake of his arrest Tuesday.
A Champaign police report said narcotics agents, using informants, purchased about a gram of heroin for $70 from Powell on July 25 near an Urbana park. Using that information, they obtained a search warrant for his home, which they served on Tuesday.
In a safe in his home they found a bag containing three smaller bags of heroin that weighed about three grams. They also found $324 in cash.
Powell had been free on bond after being charged May 24 with delivery of a controlled substance.
In that case, which is unresolved, Powell was spotted on May 23 involved in an alleged drug transaction on North Cunningham Avenue in Urbana. He ran from drug detectives into a nearby restaurant, where detectives believe he flushed drugs down the toilet. However, deputies recovered about $2,938 and about a gram of heroin from him that day.
In addition to that pending case, Powell is still serving a sentence of probation for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance that he received in June 2013.
If convicted of all of the unresolved drug charges, he would have to serve the sentences for them one after the other.
He faces a mandatory prison term on both of the counts filed Wednesday should he be convicted.
