Delivery of pot leads to charge

URBANA — A Champaign man who took delivery Thursday of a package that contained about three pounds of cannabis has been criminally charged.

State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said her office filed a charge of possession with intent to deliver cannabis Friday against De Artist L. Hawkins, 25, who listed an address in the 1400 block of Hollyhill Drive.

Rietz said postal officials in Peoria on Wednesday discovered a package addressed to the Hollyhill Drive home that they suspected contained cannabis and contacted police in Champaign County.

Local police made arrangements for the post office to deliver the package on Thursday and when Hawkins took delivery, police were waiting with a search warrant. After discovering the package contained three bundles of suspected cannabis weighing about 3.3 pounds, police arrested Hawkins.

Rietz said Hawkins told police that another man had offered him $150 to accept the package.

If convicted of the felony charge, Hawkins faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
