In 1914, the U.S. Army is tiny by comparison with the great armed hosts moving in Europe, according to Brig. Gen Leonard Wood. It shows that the army has 4,602 officers and 80,000 enlisted men scattered over the world.

In 1964, that Monday's 101-degree temperature broke a 34-year-old record and marked the hottest day in Champaign-Urbana since Sept. 6, 1954.

In 1999, children in the Rossville-Alvin school district are going to hear plenty about sex — as in not having it — this fall. The district will be the first in Vermilion County to offer a character-building program from Catholic Social Services that encourages sexual abstinence. The program will be offered from grade school through high school.
