Champaign man accused of sex with teen
URBANA — A Champaign man accused of having sex with a teen from Arcola is being held in the Champaign County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.
Christopher Monroe, 25, who listed an address in the 100 block of Roper Street, was arraigned Wednesday on one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and two counts of failure to register as a sex offender, all felonies.
State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said the sex abuse charge alleges that during the month of June, Monroe had sex with the teen several times in his home during a period when she had run away from her Arcola home.
Rietz said the girl’s mother had discovered text messages in June on her daughter’s phone from Monroe and contacted him to inform him that her daughter was only 15. A month later, the parents learned their daughter was pregnant.
Rietz said the girl had a friend dating Monroe’s brother and that the girl met Monroe through Facebook.
Champaign police interviewed Monroe and he admitted having sex with the girl multiple times during the period she ran away from home, Rietz said.
The aggravated criminal sexual abuse count alleges that he was over 17, at least five years older than the girl, and that she was between the ages of 13 and 17 when the sex happened.
Because of a juvenile adjudication for aggravated criminal sexual abuse that Monroe received in 2003, he is required to register as a sex offender. The latter charges allege that in April and early August, he failed to notify Champaign police of where he was working and living.
Judge John Kennedy ordered Monroe to have no contact with the alleged victim and to be back in court Sept. 9.
If convicted of the most serious charge, Monroe faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
