Urbana man charged after vehicle break-in

URBANA — An Urbana man arrested in Savoy on Tuesday night for allegedly getting in vehicles to steal is due back in court next month.

Rayshaun Thomas, 19, who listed an address in the 2400 block of Prairie Green, was charged Wednesday with two counts of burglary for allegedly getting in two vehicles in the parking lot at The Village at Colbert Park, an apartment complex off Old Church Road just east of U.S. 45.

Champaign County sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Mills said deputies were notified at 11:37 p.m. by a witness that a group of four men were trying to get in vehicles.

When deputies J.R. Meeker and Mark Maiden arrived, the group spotted them and took off running. The University of Illinois Police Department’s dog was brought in to help deputies; only Thomas was caught.

Judge John Kennedy allowed him to be released on his own recognizance and told him to be back in court Sept. 9. If convicted, he faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
