Driver runs car through wall of Urbana home

URBANA - An Urbana man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol early Saturday after his car crashed through the wall of a home not far from his own.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Vercler said about 4:30 a.m., Andrew Shannon was driving south on Scottswood Drive in east Urbana, just south of University Avenue, when he failed to negotiate a curve, ran over a stop sign, then hit the corner of the house at 202 S. Dodson Drive.

Vercler said the front of Shannon's Mazda 626 pushed through the wall of a bedroom a few feet.

No one was in that room. However, the home owner, Michelle Cruz-Santiago, was in another room. She was not harmed.

Shannon lists an address in the 400 block of South Glenn Drive, a few blocks south of where the crash occurred.

He was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital where he submitted to a blood and urine test then was transferred to the Champaign County Jail.

He is being held in lieu of $15,000 bond.

The use of the word  "through" in the headline, makes it a little sensationalized.

"Into" might be a bit more accurate.
