Savoy Village Board studying yard-waste options
SAVOY — Residents are still permitted to burn leaves and twigs within village limits, although that may be coming to an end.
Some Village Board members and staff have received complaints from residents and business owners about the nuisance of smoke from fires within the village, especially for people with asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
It is permissible by the existing municipal code to burn leaves and twigs within the village, except where prohibited by subdivision covenants. Several subdivisions forbid burning, including Prairie Fields, Prairie Meadows and Arbour Meadows. The Arbours and "old town" Savoy are the predominant locations where burning is allowed. Burning trash is not permitted anywhere within the village.
The village does not currently offer any type of yard waste removal or leaf collection, which may also soon change. Director of Public Works Brent Maue is talking with other municipalities to compare different systems and the costs of different options for yard waste pickup.
Maue said the village receives several phone calls each spring and fall from residents asking about yard waste disposal.
The village board will have a study session next month to discuss options for dealing with yard waste. Maue estimates the annual cost of providing yard waste removal will be between $15,000 and $20,000.
