Autopsy today for man found along tracks
CHAMPAIGN — An autopsy will be performed today on the man found dead along railroad tracks in Champaign over the weekend.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said that the man, who has been described by police as homeless, still had not been positively identified as of Sunday evening.
"We are still trying to reach the next of kin," Northrup said.
Police called the death "suspicious" and are treating it as a homicide.
Champaign police Lt. Bob Rea said just after 10 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a report of an unresponsive man along the Canadian National Railway tracks just south of the Springfield Avenue viaduct.
Rea said it was obvious to them that the man was dead. Northrup said the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:05 a.m. Saturday.
