I-74 crash near Urbana temporarily closes lane

URBANA — A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 74 near Urbana shut down a portion of the highway early Wednesday.

A release from the Illinois State Police at Pesotum said just before 4 a.m. Cardell Downs, no age or address given, was driving a semitrailer tractor truck east just east of Urbana when he ran into the back end of a van, causing it to roll over into the median.

The passing lane of the highway was closed temporarily while emergency crews tended to the van and its driver, Sergey Pugach, no age or address given. Pugach was taken to a hospital for observation.

Downs was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash while Pugach was ticketed for operating an uninsured vehicle, police said.

Both drivers wore seat belts.
