Man gets 5 years in prison for gun on I-57

URBANA — A Mississippi man who admitted he had a gun in a car that police stopped on an interstate in Champaign County has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Alfonzo R. Green, 44, of Jackson, Miss., pleaded guilty Wednesday before Judge Heidi Ladd to unlawful use of weapons by a felon in connection with his arrest on June 7.

Other more serious charges of armed violence and possession with intent to deliver cannabis were dismissed in return for Green’s guilty plea.

He was arrested on I-57 west of Champaign about 3:15 p.m. that day because a trooper saw what appeared to be an obstructed windshield and three children who were not in car seats.

Police ultimately found cannabis, suspected cocaine and a loaded .22-caliber gun in the car. Because of a prior conviction for possession of a controlled substance, Green is not allowed to have a gun. He was given credit for 68 days already served.

Co-defendant Anthony L. Smith, 27, of Harvey, is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
