Farmer City names playground for former teacher

FARMER CITY — A resolution to rename the playground at South Park to honor former Blue Ridge teacher Mike Hendricks was passed unanimously.

Mayor Michael Jenkins had initially proposed the renaming of the entire park, but some citizens expressed concerns that South Park was bigger than any one name.

It was decided that the playground, which was installed with work from Hendricks and his fellow Kiwanis members, was a more proper fit.

City manager Larry Woliung said there would be some sort of memorial plaque placed at the property.

— Also, Farmer City's golf cart ordinance was amended so permit fees are now $25, down from $100. Many said that rate was exorbitant compared to other nearby towns.

The ordinance now also reads that golf carts may be operated year-round, as long as weather permits. Previously, the dates for operating a cart were April 1 to Nov. 3.
