Coroner identifies murdered homeless man

CHAMPAIGN - Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup has identified a man found murdered in Champaign earlier this month.

The man discovered about 10 a.m. on Aug. 9 was Lonnie D. Scheel, 50, who died from traumatic injuries. He was found in the 0-100 block of East Springfield Avenue not far from the Canadian National Railway tracks.

Northrup described Mr. Scheel as homeless and said he was having trouble making contact with relatives.

"It was difficult to locate next of kin for someone who does not have a place of residence nor a steady employer," said Northrup. "We have made notification to family members as of today. (They) were not aware Mr. Scheel was currently in Champaign County and were appreciative for being notified in person before public release of their loved one's identity."

Champaign police are in charge of the homicide investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 351-4545 or Crimestoppers of Champaign County at 373-8477.

I've worked with people who are homeless before and have always thought they should try to get contact information in whatever form from them when they have contact. Mostly the longtimers. Too many die on the streets or alone and without the family hearing from them again.
