Top of the Morning, Aug. 18, 2014

Your Sunday paper included one of my favorite things: The Answer Book.

We started working on it back in the spring and finished in mid-July.

The content changes from one year to the next, but nearly every year we list, by category, some of the better-known people who have called this area home at some time in their lives.

It's just a list.

But what a list.

From Dick Butkus to Bonnie Blair, Alison Krauss to Dan Fogelberg, Roger Ebert to Ang Lee, Richard Powers to Dee Brown (yes, our list has two Dee Browns), Nick Offerman to Gene Hackman and the Van Dyke brothers, Dick and Jerry: pick a category and it's really astonishing to contemplate the brilliance — in so many fields.

Makes me wonder who your favorite "famous former" might be.

For me, it's easy.

Alison Krauss. No, Dee Brown. Wait, Roger Ebert ...

So who's your favorite? Let me know at, or comment here. As you submit names, I'll add them to the online gallery attached to this story.

One more thing: Every year, a reader will suggest someone we've inadvertently left out. If you find one, please drop me a note, and we'll fix that for next year.

I'm a big fan. Such a shame.

How about John Bardeen? One of two people to ever win the Nobel Prize twice in the same field.
