Updated: Coroner identifies woman killed in collision with train

CHAMPAIGN - A 52-year-old Champaign woman was killed late Sunday or early Monday in a collision with a train northwest of Champaign.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Diane M. Siewert, 52, of Champaign was pronounced dead at 1:33 a.m. Monday at the scene of the crash.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Greg Mills deputies were called to the 3200 block of Cardinal Road at 12:43 a.m.

"A passerby did not see the accident but called us for what appeared to be a vehicle rolled over," Mills said.

They discovered one person inside the car, which was destroyed.

"Based on our initial investigation, the vehicle was westbound on Cardinal Road and struck a train as it was passing," said Mills, adding there are no crossing arms or lights at that location.

Mills said deputies believe the collision happened 30 to 60 minutes prior to the car being discovered.

"Each crossing track has a unique numerical identifier. We can contact the track owner and they can give approximation of times trains have been in that area," he said.

Asked if the train operator was aware of the collision, Mills said only: "The investigation is still pending."

Mills said the tracks are Norfolk Southern tracks.

He said fog was not an issue at the time of the accident.

"At the time we got there, it was not foggy. I was out there from shortly after the call until after 2 a.m. When I left is when I noticed the fog," he said.
