Unit 7 chief sees deficit in budget

TOLONO — Unit 7's school superintendent has tentatively projected a deficit budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year.

Under the plan, the district would spend $19.9 million and bring in about $18.2 million. The red ink is mainly in the site/construction fund, where there is a projected shortfall of $1.6 million. The building fund is expected to have a deficit of $97,400.

Superintendent Andrew Larson characterized the deficits as "typical."

The education fund is also in the red, by $87,810. But the transportation fund is in the black by $52,700.

The projected ending balance for the education fund is $6.52 million. The balance for the building fund is expected to be $768,035. Transportation's ending balance is projected at $897,466.

The school board will vote on approving the budget on Sept. 17.
