Updated: multiple weather advisories issued for East Central Illinois

NEW 4:30 p.m. Monday:

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued until 11 p.m. Monday for the following counties:  Champaign, Ford, Iroquois and Vermilion.

Original story:

An excessive heat warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties: Macon, Moultrie, Coles and Shelby.

A heat advisory will be in effect from noon Monday to 7 p.m. Tuesday for Champaign, Vermilion, McLean, DeWitt, Piatt, Douglas and Edgar counties.  Ford and Iroquois counties are under a separate heat advisory until 10 p.m. Monday.

The heat index will reach dangerous levels during the afternoon Monday and Tuesday.  Heat-related illnesses can come on quickly with any exertion.  The very young and the elderly, individuals who don't have air conditioning and those participating in strenuous outdoor activities are most susceptible to heat related illnesses.

Drink plenty of water, stay in the shade or air conditioning as much as possible and wear loose fitting clothing.  Check on family members and neighbors.  Don't leave children or pets in standing cars, even with the windows open, because the heat can build to deadly levels very quickly.
