Notes from the newsroom

— On Sunday night, we unveiled our new-look website. Today's allows us to A) emphasize our expanding video operation (right); B) spotlight more stories, blogs and photo galleries; and C) better pool our radio and newspaper talent.

Give it a try and shoot me an email at with thoughts or questions. The tinkering and upgrades will continue into September.

— "A Penny For Your Thoughts" host Jim Turpin might not get a word in during Thursday's show (9-11 a.m., WDWS 1400-AM).

For the first time, he'll have three regulars in studio at the same time: News-Gazette columnist Jim Dey, Appellate Court Justice Robert Steigmann and former U.S. District Court Judge and current state judge Michael McCuskey.

"I'm going to throw out topics, and they'll argue with one another," Turpin said. "It'll be a roundtable discussion."

To participate, call 217-356-9397.

— Our annual high school football special section will be a part of your Friday newspaper. The 20-page project was made possible by friendly rivals at St. Joseph-Ogden and Unity, who are back in the same conference this season. Players from both teams joined us for a picnic at our radio center earlier this month, a scene depicted on the cover (right).

— Our popular Monday night radio show — "The News-Gazette Sports Page" — returns to the Esquire in downtown Champaign on Sept. 8. Like our website, it's worth a look.

I hate the new look.  It reminds me of a tabloid.  It's hard to follow.  I like a newspaper to look like a newspaper.
