No MTD routes on Monday

Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District buses will not operate on Monday in observance of Labor Day.

That includes the revised Air Bus service to Willard Airport, which begins anew on Tuesday.

The final day of operation for the current Air Bus route will be Sunday. The updated Air Bus with a new route and timetable will begin operation on Tuesday, with 10 trips to and from the airport every day Monday through Saturday.

The new route will operate as an express service between the Illinois Terminal in downtown Champaign, the Illini Union and the Willard Airport terminal.

While I'm glad the bus drivers and other support staff get a day off, this underscores the problem with relying on public transit.  If it isn't available 24/365, you still have to have your own method of transportation.  And at the point you have your own method of transportation, why take the bus?  Unless you're going to campus, then parking is so overpriced, it's better to find any alternative you can.

Happy Labor Day everyone!  Enjoy the time off if you get it.

Champaign-Urbana has a world-class transit system in the MTD, but there are some shortcomings:

  • No holiday service whatsoever. Nearly every transit system in the world reduces service on days when its regular riders are not traveling to their jobs or to school, but seriously — no MTD service at all on holidays?
  • No service on Sunday evenings west of downtown Champaign or east of downtown Urbana. To add insult to injury, the more extensive Sunday daytime service ends just minutes before the early evening Amtrak arrivals from Chicago and Carbondale.

I know the MTD can't be everywhere at all times, but it would be nice if a semblance of service could run on holidays, and if a broader area could connect with most Amtrak and intercity bus arrivals and departures outside of mainstream service hours.
