Urbana man arrested for allegedly firing gun

URBANA — An Urbana man was arrested early Saturday for allegedly firing a gun in his own neighborhood.

Urbana police Sgt. Andy Charles said officers who were in the area of Hunter Street and Lierman Avenue heard several shots fired about 12:25 a.m.

The officers found witnesses who also heard shots and gave them the location of where the shots were fired - the 1300 block of Ivanhoe Way - and a description of the suspected shooter.

Police found Devarius Austin, 22, of the 1600 block of Ivanhoe Way, in the area and arrested him for reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of weapons.

Charles said police did not find a gun or spent cartridges but did find live rounds on the ground near where Austin had been.

No one was injured and no property was apparently damaged, Charles said.

A judge Saturday set Austin’s bond at $50,000 and told him to be in court Tuesday for arraignment.
