Champaign teen charged in DUI crash that injured Urbana woman
URBANA — A Champaign teen who was allegedly drunk when she seriously injured an Urbana woman in a car crash last month has been charged with felony driving under the influence.
The charge was filed in Champaign County Circuit Court Friday against Sophia Marick, 18, of the 900 block of West White Street.
Assistant State’s Attorney Elizabeth Dornik said a Champaign County sheriff’s deputy’s report said that about 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, Marick was driving her car west on County Road 1000 N, when she failed to stop for the stop sign at Illinois 130. Her car T-boned one driven south on 130 by Lisa Emmert, 24, of Urbana. The crash happened about a mile north of Philo.
Dornik said preliminary information was that Emmert sustained broken ribs, a broken pelvis and a brain injury. She has since been released from Carle Hospital, a spokesman said.
Marick performed poorly on field sobriety tests and admitted to the deputy that she had been drinking prior to the crash, Dornik said.
Austin Crank, 18, of Urbana, was with Marick and also was issued a notice to appear in court for underage drinking.
Marick is due to appear before Judge Richard Klaus on Sept. 19 for arraignment.
