Man charged with aggravated robbery
URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly robbed a motel clerk in July is due back in court in October following his arraignment Tuesday.
Ramone D. Roebuck, 38, who listed an address in the 300 block of East Park Avenue, was charged with a single count of aggravated robbery alleging that on July 13, he went in the Quality Inn, 305 W. Marketview Drive, C, and implied he had a gun while demanding money from the clerk.
A Champaign police report said the robber held his hand under his sweatshirt and told the clerk, "If you scream, I will shoot you." The clerk handed over cash and the robber drove away in a silver Jeep.
The report said witnesses were able to describe the Jeep, which police recognized as belonging to Roebuck. He was spotted by a police officer Friday night and when the officer talked to him about the robbery, he denied involvement.
However, a witness identified Roebuck's Jeep as the vehicle that left the motel after the robbery. The police report said the motel clerk also picked Roebuck out of a photo lineup as the person who robbed her.
Roebuck is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond. Judge John Kennedy told him to be back in court Oct. 21.
If convicted, he faces penalties ranging from six to 30 years in prison because of his prior criminal convictions, which include robbery, theft, burglary and criminal trespass to residence.
