Crews remain on the scene of a gas leak in Urbana.

Urbana Fire Marhsal Phil Edwards said a construction crew hit a four inch natural gas line at around 10:20 Wednesday morning at the intersection of Crystal Lake Drive and North Broadway Avenue.

The 600, 700 and 800 blocks of North Broadway Avenue as well as Crystal Lake Drive between Broadway Avenue and Cunningham Avenue have been evacuated.  Edwards said the natural gas posed a danger, and residents were evacuated for their safety.

Edwards also said that electricity has been shut off to 15 to 20 homes in the area.  He said crews will have to dig in three separate places to repair the leak, and that if all goes well things should be back to normal by 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
