3 arrested in connection with La Bamba holdup
URBANA — Three people are in police custody in connection with the holdup of a west Champaign business last week.
Champaign police believe that the trio is responsible for the Aug. 28 armed robbery of La Bamba, 1905 Glenn Park Drive.
Arrested Wednesday at his home was Michael R. Hines, 26, who listed an address in the 1600 block of Cruising Lane, Champaign.
On Thursday, police located Daviet J. Henderson, 20, of the 2100 block of West White Street, Champaign, and Diamond Washington, 23, of Decatur, at a hotel in Champaign.
Assistant State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said Hines was arraigned Thursday on charges of armed robbery and aggravated robbery. The other two were expected to be arraigned on the same charges Friday.
According to the facts laid out in court for Judge John Kennedy by Assistant State's Attorney Tim Sullivan, two masked men went in the restaurant about 1:20 a.m. last Thursday as employees were cleaning and preparing to close. At least one of the men was armed with a gun.
He said both robbers jumped over the counter and ordered employees to open the register, which they did. The men took the money and left, getting into a car driven by Washington, who remained outside.
Sullivan said police were able to lift a palm print from the counter that matched Hines, who implicated the other two in the holdup. Police also recovered clothing and a cash drawer as evidence.
Kennedy set Hines' bond at $125,000. Sullivan said Hines has prior convictions for criminal trespass to residence and theft. He's currently serving a sentence of probation on the theft conviction.
