Today is Friday, Sept. 5, 2014. Here are news reports from this date 100, 50 and 15 years ago:

In 1914: Approximately 2,000 pupils will start school Monday morning in Champaign grade schools. About 200 of the students are first-graders, with the largest first grade enrollment at Marquette School, 42 pupils. Urbana schools also will open Monday.

In 1964: U.S. Sens. Paul Douglas and Everett Dirksen will be present at the formal opening of Urbana's Lincoln Square shopping center on Sept. 17. Gov. Otto Kerner also has said he will attend the ceremonies.

In 1999: For the first time in seven years, the Fighting Illini won their first game of the year, a 41-3 stomping of Arkansas State. Running back Rocky Harvey scored twice and ran for 96 yards.
