Champaign man arrested after shots fired in east Urbana

URBANA — No one was hurt, but a Champaign man is in custody after a Tuesday night shooting in the Lierman Avenue neighborhood of east Urbana.

Police responded to a report of shots fired in the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Hunter Street around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, said Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan. They found shell casings on the street and in the grass in front of an apartment building.

“The female resident of the apartment gave officers consent to search the apartment,” Morgan said. “When they did so, they found a pistol hidden inside a trash can. It had some ammunition in it ... but it was mostly empty.”

Morgan said the gun belonged to Derrick Lamont Lambert, 25, who listed an address in the 2800 block of Santa Ana Road, C. Lambert allegedly admitted to exchanging gun fire with another person. He was arrested Tuesday night on preliminary charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen firearm and trespassing.

The other shooter is believed to be a juvenile and is not in custody, Morgan said.

He said the impetus for the exchange of gunfire was an “ongoing feud between family members.”
