Cocaine charge for man who was allegedly stealing from Walmart in Rantoul

RANTOUL — A Champaign man faces a felony drug charge after being caught in Rantoul with nine small bags of cocaine.

Bond was set at $15,000 Friday for Nevada Powell, 19, who listed an address in the 1200 block of Crispus Drive. He was arrested Thursday night in Rantoul after allegedly having spent the prior three weeks stealing alcohol from Walmart there, said Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz.

Powell was spotted Thursday wearing the same clothing as he was wearing in store video, Rietz said. He was searched upon arrest and Rantoul police officers found the nine bags of cocaine in his pocket weighing a total of 2.7 grams.

He allegedly admitted to stealing from Walmart.

Powell was charged with burglary and possession of cocaine with intent to deliver. Rietz said he is also on parole from the Department of Juvenile Justice.
