Woman formally charged with aggravated criminal sex abuse

BEMENT — A 43-year-old Bement woman has been charged with one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Tamzin Wegrich, a former bus driver, assistant cheerleading sponsor and pool manager in Bement, had been arrested on Oct. 7.

A concerned citizen brought the possible abuse to the attention of Piatt County sheriff's police in July.

Piatt County State's Attorney Dana Rhoades said Monday that Wegrich is charged with sexual contact with a male between the ages of 13 and 17 between July 1 and Aug. 1 of this year.

Other potential victims were identified but ruled out, Rhoades said.

Rhoades added that Wegrich had no prior criminal record and has cooperated with the investigation.

Wegrich has been the pool manager for the village of Bement for the past three years, a seasonal position that ended when the pool closed in late August.

She had also been an assistant cheerleading sponsor at Bement High School, but her resignation was accepted by the school board last week.

In addition, she was a driver for Birch Bus Service, which is contracted to provide transportation for the school district.

Rhoades said she received the report on the investigation from the sheriff's office on Monday.

Wegrich's first court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 28 in Piatt County court.

If convicted, she faces up to seven years in prison.
