Victim in first of two Saturday shootings dies

An Urbana man has died after being shot over the weekend, the second fatality in Champaign from gunshot incidents separated by less than two hours.

Champaign County Coroner Duane E. Northrup said Yojevol Sturkey, 35, of Urbana, died at 8:16 a.m. Wednesday at Carle Foundation Hospital.

An autopsy will be performed Thursday, Northrup said.

Mr. Sturkey was wounded in a shooting at 2:14 a.m. Saturday in the 900 block of West Bradley Avenue.

Less than two hours later, a second man was fatally shot in Champaign, near Summit Ridge and Hedge Road. In that incident, Jermel M. Hedrick, 24, was killed.

Police have said multiple shots were fired in each incident.

Drug-related charges have been brought against a Champaign man following that second shooting.

Police have not said whether the incidents are related. Investigations into both are continuing.
