Arthur man killed in bicycle accident

ARTHUR — An Arthur man was killed while riding his bicycle to work early Friday.

Moultrie County Coroner Lynn Reed said Velvon Schrock, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision between his bicycle and a car driven by Jessie Lee Wilson, 41, of Mattoon.

A release from Illinois State Police at Pesotum said the accident happened about 6:50 a.m. on Moultrie County Road 1800 E, about a half-mile north of County Road 1900 N. The location is about 1  1/2 miles south of Arthur.

Police said Mr. Schrock was riding south on County Road 1800 N when he was hit by Wilson’s northbound car.

Police said Wilson was passing a northbound bicyclist and driving to the left of the center of the road, when the front of his car hit Mr. Schrock’s bicycle, knocking him off of it.

The release said Mr. Schrock was not riding as close as practical to the right hand edge of the road. He was also not wearing a bicycle helmet or any contrasting clothing,

Police said Wilson voluntarily submitted to chemical testing. He was ticketed for improper overtaking.

An Illinois State Police crash reconstruction specialist was assigned to investigate.

Reed said Mr. Schrock died of multiple head and neck injuries due to blunt force trauma.
