Arcola man shot and killed by police in domestic dispute

ARCOLA - Arcola police shot and killed a man in that village who confronted them with guns as they responded to a domestic dispute Sunday night.

A release from Illinois State Police said Arcola officers were sent to a call at 224 Circle Drive at 5:39 p.m. where a man had a gun.

"During the course of their investigation, officers were confronted by a subject armed with an assault rifle and a handgun. During their encounter, officers shot and fatally wounded the subject."

He was identified as Tommy E. Smith, 39, of Arcola.

Tuscola and Arthur police and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office also responded. The Illinois State Police have been asked to investigate.

Douglas County Coroner Joe Victor has scheduled an autopsy for Mr. Smith for Tuesday.

No other details were immediately available.
