Cronus inks construction contract for Tuscola plant

Last fall, the big announcement was made that a more than a billion dollar fertilizer plant was coming to Douglas County. Now the next step in helping to make the project a reality has been taken.

Cronus Fertilizers announced Monday that it has signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract with Tecnimont. The deal is similar to one with a general contractor.  It is an approximately $1.5 billion contract with Tecnimont, an Illinois subsidiary of a larger company that is based out of Italy.

Construction is expected to begin in this summer and will be complete in about three years.  At the height of construction, there will be about 2,000 jobs, as well as around 200 permanent jobs once the work is complete. That includes a Chicago headquarters for the plant.

The Cronus Fertilizers plant will be located on a site just west of Tuscola at County Road 765 east along Route 36.  That site was chosen over Iowa and several other states.
