Champaign school board will respond by deadline on forum request

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign school board will respond by noon Tuesday to an invitation from the Keep Central Central political action group about participating in a public forum concerning the school district's $144 million proposal, up for a vote on the April 7 ballot.

Because policies are in place about what a school board is allowed to do in terms of informing the public and engaging in a public debate, the board had to obtain legal advice before responding to the group's request, school board President Laurie Bonnett said.

"As the request was made for the Board of Education to participate, it would be on our terms, at a location of our choosing and under the guidelines that have been practice for years. I'm not sure the invitee understands the legal ramifications of what she is asking," she said. "I have reached out to verify what we can legally do as well as to my fellow board members to ask their input. We will have a response to them by their requested time of noon Tuesday."

Keep Central Central sent a formal invitation to the school board on March 4 asking two or three school board members to participate in the discussion.
