Today is Thursday, March 26, 2015. Here are news reports from this date 100, 50 and 15 years ago:

In 1915: The W. Lewis Department Store has taken over the entire Witt Building at Walnut and Taylor streets in downtown Champaign as its new home. The store's former headquarters was destroyed in the March 17 downtown Champaign blaze. The new location has "a complete department store stock and everything new from a spool of thread to the finest Whittall rug."

In 1965: Smiley Burnette, formerly of Champaign, and the Tuscola resident known as Charley Pratt, engineer on the Hooterville Cannonball of TV's "Petticoat Junction," recently hosted Mrs. Alyene Prehn of Urbana and her son, Paul Prehn Jr. of Lafayette, Calif., on the set of the TV show. Burnette began his show business career as a radio announcer on Tuscola's WDZ, the first radio station in Illinois.

In 2000: University of Illinois student organizations breathed a sigh of relief last week when the Supreme Court approved mandatory activity fees on college campuses. UI student groups reap about $475,000 a year from the $7 per semester Student Organization Resource Fee.
