Downed light pole followed by DUI arrest

CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign woman who allegedly hit a power pole in downtown Champaign, knocking it over, was arrested late Friday for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Champaign police Sgt. Bruce Ramseyer said Morgan Rae Allison, 24, of the 1700 block of Westlawn Ave., was arrested after a witness saw a sport utility vehicle hit a light pole in front of The Wedge in the 400 block of North Neil Street about 11:45 p.m., knocking it over, then keep going south.

The witness followed the vehicle, which made its way to State Street near Springfield, where it stopped. Police arrived and found two men pushing it.

The officer identified Allison as the driver. She told the officer she had left a downtown bar and was driving home when she hit something large but didn’t know what she had hit. She also told the officer that her SUV “stopped working” at State and Springfield. Two men who were pushing the car were merely trying to help the woman and were not with her, Ramseyer said.

Ramseyer said Allison told police that she had consumed one or two beers and that the accident may have had more to do with her texting while driving than her drinking. She performed poorly on field sobriety tests, he said.

Ramseyer said after being checked out at a hospital, where she gave blood and urine samples, Allison was taken to the county jail.

Ramseyer said a breath test put her blood-alcohol concentration at 0.199 percent, more than twice the limit for an Illinois motorist to be presumed intoxicated.

Allison was released from the county jail early Saturday morning after posting bond.

Ramseyer said public works employees cleaned up the light post early Saturday.

Now see, that's what happens when you combine texting, drinking, and driving. It's a good thing her SUV stopped because she apparently wasn't planning on it.
