Driver in Champaign crash dies; passengers hurt

CHAMPAIGN — The driver of a car who crashed into a tree in northwest Champaign late Thursday morning has died.

Champaign police Sgt. Bruce Ramseyer said the crash happened at 11:07 a.m. in the 1400 block of Williamsburg Drive.

Coroner Duane Northrup said Troy Ngo, 19, of Champaign, died from traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital at 12:09 p.m.

Two passengers were also taken to the hospital with what police said were non-life-threatening injuries.

Ramseyer said Mr. Ngo was going north on Williamsburg at high speed in a 2000 Acura.

"There's a little turn to the road. His car ended up off the road and hitting a mud patch and losing control," Ramseyer said.

Mr. Ngo hit a tree on the east side of the street with the driver's side of the car. He had to be cut out of the vehicle.

Northrup said no autopsy will be performed.
