Updated: Salvation Army men's shelter in Champaign to close in March

New 4:50 p.m. Friday:

Despite saying earlier this month that the men's shelter at the Salvation Army of Champaign County would be open at least through June, the head of the organization now says the shelter is closing in two weeks due to a lack of funding.

Major Tom McDowell told WDWS Friday afternoon that $120,000 is needed to keep the facility open through September. He said since that money is not available, the men's shelter in Champaign is closing on March 12th.

McDowell said at the beginning of this month that since the agency raised more than $92,000 above its goal for the red kettle campaign, the shelter would remain open through June and possible July. But he now says since the funding just isn't there to make that happen, the Salvation Army has to make the fiscally responsible decision.

McDowell said the Salvation Army lost a government grant in early 2013 of $150,000, which he says is just too difficult of a gap to continue to try and fill. He said reserves have been spent down since that time as part of an effort to fill that funding hole. McDowell said the Salvation Army is still going to remain committed to assisting other groups and agencies with helping the homeless in the area.

The Salvation Army was planning to close the men's shelter at the end of December, but enough was raised to keep it going to this point.

McDowell said enough money was raised earlier this winter to keep the shelter open through the colder weather. But he said the funding isn't there anymore to keep the shelter going.
